Escaping Google’s “sandbox”

Much has been written on various online search engine forums about Google’s “sandbox effect”, where a new site has momentarily high rankings in Google when launched and then slips into oblivion soon after. The first site I’ve experienced this with was for Coventry Travel Agents, Carrick Select (which escaped the sandbox today for “coventry travel agents” and ranking at #65). Although ranking well in Yahoo and other engines on some search terms it was no where to be seen on Google. As I added links however I noticed that the site slowly crept up the rankings for the keyphrases that were in the anchor text of the links I’d gathered. On page optimisation made a little difference to the rankings but the links made a lot more.

This seems to bears out the theory I talked about a few days ago although I need to more tests.
